When we hear “keto shakes” our mind instantly jumps to one of the many companies selling “special” shakes that promise an increase in weight loss, reversal of a cheat meal, or worse… a cure for any number of diseases/ailments. So needless to say, when we stumbled upon Kētologie we were a bit skeptical. But we decided to give it a try because we have many Ketonians that love to have a shake for an on-the-go fast meal/snack.

Ingredients

Kētologie comes in both vanilla and chocolate shake options. Looking at the ingredients list is one of the very first things we do here at Keto-Mojo before trying any new food (no matter how good it tastes or smells). The ingredients are keto “clean”, in that there were no obvious ingredients that commonly stall those looking to lose weight or negatively impact ketosis. What’s unique about Kētologie is that it is a low protein high fat shake with almost DOUBLE the amount of fat as there is to protein. This fits the ketogenic diet’s defining criteria perfectly as keto is a very low carbohydrate, high fat, moderately low protein diet. Erythritol is used to sweeten this product and is listed as such in the nutritional facts label (for those following a net carbohydrate ketogenic diet erythritol is a sugar alcohol and can be subtracted from your total carbs).

Effect on Glucose & Ketone Readings

The next thing we looked at was the effects this powder had on our blood glucose levels as well as our level of ketosis. Using the keto-mojo blood ketone/glucose meter we tested both flavors over the course of two days by taking our blood glucose and ketone levels pre-prandial (before eating), post-prandial (after eating), and then again 2 hours later. With both the vanilla and the chocolate our ketone levels increased on average 0.7 mmol/L (vanilla) and 1.0mmol/L (chocolate). This is primarily attributed to the coconut oil in the powder. At the two hour mark our ketone levels were back to the starting levels +/- 0.2 mmol/L. As far as the our blood glucose levels are concerned the glucose spike was within normal limits at  6mg/dl immediately after eating and returning to baseline by the two hour mark.

How Does it Taste?

Now finally what you all have been waiting for, the taste! Personally with our macros, we prefer to use one scoop vs the two scoops that the label suggests. The shakes are quite rich and delicious. We preferred them mixed in almond milk or coconut milk over water as well. We tried them both hot and cold/frozen too. Frozen would have to be our favorite because they become a Frappe (see recipe below)! We added a scoop of vanilla one day and chocolate the next to the usual pre-workout of almond milk, MCT powder, and spinach and it was delicious but not too heavy (for those that don’t like the taste of spinach the chocolate does a great job of masking it).

Price-Value Relationship

As far as cost is concerned at $50.00 for 18 servings ($2.78 per serving) Kētologie is in the same ranks as other protein shakes, and a bit less than some of the other “keto” branded shakes. If you take our recommendation of using 1 scoop that doubles your servings per container lowering the cost per serving to $1.39 which is now in the same class as the less expensive protein powders on the market but with the benefit of using MUCH better ingredients and being moderately low protein with high fat. The fat to protein ratio will be one of the most important distinguishing factors of Kētologie’s Chocolate and Vanilla shakes, even when compared to some shakes geared towards keto.

Overall, we would have to say that Kētologie makes a delicious, affordable, and most importantly keto-friendly shake!
