By Doug’s early 30’s, he had run almost a hundred marathons and ultras and could eat pretty much anything he liked. As he approached 40, however, he noticed he was putting on a little weight each year and, no matter how hard he trained, was not able to get the weight off again. In the end Doug was constantly injured and hating running, and life itself. When he was first introduced to the concept of the Ketogenic / Banting lifestyle, he could not believe that an athlete could function without carbohydrates. However, Doug is an engineer at heart and he started reading all the research and found it made total sense. It explained all the issues he was having, including the things he struggled with back when he was running well.
Doug decided to give it a go. He had learned about the ‘Keto-Flu’ during his research so was expecting that towards the end of the first week. The adaptation seemed to last about 10 days and after that the results were spectacular. His weight started coming down and running became easier and more enjoyable each day. Doug is back down to the weight he was when he was 30, his recovery after training is better than it has ever been, his sore knees and other aches and pains have cleared up and and he’s no longer experiencing any respiratory issues. In his early twenties he was also involved in a bad motor accident and suffered severe Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and have battled with short term memory issues ever since. After embarking on this ketogenic lifestyle, Doug noticed a profound improvement in these symptoms and found himself going completely blank mid-conversation a lot less frequently. This has been a huge and unexpected benefit of adopting this LCHF way of life.
