Fotinos Panagakos, DMD, PhD

Dr. Panagakos received his DMD from UMDNJ-New Jersey Dental School (now Rutgers University School of Dental Medicine) and his PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from UMDNJ-Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (now the Rutgers University Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences) in 1992. In 1999, he received a Master’s in Education from Seton Hall University and in 2007 received a Master’s in Business Administration from Lehigh University. Beginning in 1993, Dr. Panagakos served for 13 years as a fulltime faculty member at New Jersey Dental School, serving in a number of administrative positions. In June, 2005, he joined the Colgate Palmolive Oral Care Clinical Research Department, where he worked for 12 years, and since 2011 as the Global Director of Scientific Affairs. In the fall of 2017, Dr. Panagakos transitioned back into the dental academic world.

Dr. Panagakos has co-authored over 70 peer-reviewed scientific research articles and co-edited three dental science textbooks. His research has focused on the role of inflammation in oral and overall health, and the effects of poor oral health on chronic diseases, such as diabetes and heart disease. Over the past two years, Dr. Panagakos has combined this research with his interest in low carb/ketogenic nutrition and refined his focus on the impact of nutrition on oral health and disease, and the effects on overall health. In his spare time, Dr. Panagakos is an avid runner, having completed 43 marathons since 2012. He enjoys running races at all distances, and is currently in the process of completing a marathon in every US state.
